Strong community fabric built by the bold

Nearly 60 years ago, a group of high school students did what even few adults dared to do — speak out. During a time where most expected conformity, seven Iowa teenagers decided to challenge the status quo.

Seven everyday Iowans decided enough was enough.

Not with their words. But with what they wore. It spoke volumes. Their anti-war statement reverberated across the country.

Louder than their principal. Louder than the school district. Louder than the Vietnam war effort. Loud enough, until they were heard.

Highest court in the land sided with seven Iowa teenagers. All these years later, and the choice seemed obvious.

But history remembers the bold fondly.

At around the same time, Gap was born. Foraged by those who had the same audacity. Raised 1800 miles away from those brave students but with the same goal in mind, to remain steadfast in your resolve — against all conventional wisdom.

Audacious choices, in fashion or society, are born strand by strand. Clothes for everyday folks. Supported by everyday folks. Folks just like you.

Same audacity, different risk

Decades later, the same power struggle continues. A new generation has “the nerve” to be loud. Has the nerve to say what is required. In the face of a feed full of human misery, a new generation has taken the mantle.

The fight is different, but the choice not to remain silent is the same.

All the years later, Gap remains the same. Unbothered by the risk takers. Unwavered in the face of adversity. Standing by those who dare. Both in fashion and in the community. Gap stands proudly and bravely with the changemakers.

Since 1969, Gap has demonstrated that ruptures the status quo and calls on others do so, in any way they can.
